Information About Squirrel Pest Control

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the two main species of squirrels found in London, United Kingdom, are the Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) and the Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris). Here are some details about each:

Grey Squirrel (Sciurus Carolinensis)

Description: The grey squirrel is larger than the red squirrel and has distinctive grey fur, although its coloration can vary from silver-grey to dark grey.

Habitat: Grey squirrels are highly adaptable and have thrived in both urban and rural environments. They are commonly found in parks, gardens, woodlands, and even residential areas.

Behavior: Grey squirrels are known for their agility and climbing abilities. They are opportunistic feeders, consuming a variety of foods, including nuts, seeds, fruits, and even bird eggs.

Status: Grey squirrels are not native to the UK and were introduced in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They have, to some extent, displaced native red squirrels in certain areas.

Red Squirrel (Sciurus Vulgaris)

Description: Red squirrels are smaller than grey squirrels and have red or reddish-brown fur. They also have distinctive ear tufts.

Habitat: While once widespread, the red squirrel has seen a decline in its population, particularly in England and Wales, due to competition with the grey squirrel and the spread of the squirrelpox virus.

Behavior: Red squirrels are also skilled climbers and foragers. They prefer coniferous woodlands but can adapt to various habitats.

Conservation Status: Red squirrels are considered native to the UK, and conservation efforts are in place to protect and conserve their remaining populations.

It’s important to note that the grey squirrel is more prevalent and widespread in London and many other parts of the UK. Conservationists work to protect and support red squirrel populations where they still exist, often in more isolated or specific regions.

For the most up-to-date information on the types of squirrels in London, you may want to check with local wildlife organizations, nature reserves, or conservation authorities. Additionally, regulations and information may have evolved since my last update in January 2022.

Reasons to Control Squirrels

There are several reasons why removing squirrels from a property may be necessary:

  • Property Damage
Squirrels can cause significant damage to a property. They may chew on wooden structures, insulation, and electrical wiring, which can lead to costly repairs. Gnawed wires, in particular, pose a fire hazard.

  • Garden and Landscape Damage
Squirrels are known for digging up gardens, eating plants, and raiding bird feeders. This can be frustrating for homeowners who invest time and effort in maintaining their outdoor spaces.

  • Noise Disturbance
Squirrels can be noisy, especially if they nest in attics or crawl spaces. Their activities, such as running, scratching, and gnawing, can disrupt the peace and quiet within a home.

  • Health Risks
While rare, squirrels can carry diseases like leptospirosis and ticks that may transmit Lyme disease. Their droppings can also pose a health risk, especially if they accumulate in enclosed spaces.
  • Nesting Habits
Squirrels may choose to nest in inconvenient or inaccessible areas of a property, such as attics. Their nesting materials can clog vents and create potential fire hazards.

  • Potential Aggression
In certain situations, particularly if a squirrel feels threatened or cornered, it may become aggressive. This poses a risk to residents, especially if there are small children or pets on the property.

  • Population Control
If the squirrel population on a property becomes too large, it can lead to increased competition for food and territory among the squirrels themselves. This can result in more aggressive behaviour and a higher likelihood of property damage.

  • Preventing Recurrence
Removing squirrels from the property and implementing preventive measures, such as proofing or blocking access points, is essential to prevent future infestations and the associated problems.

It’s important to note that while squirrels are a natural part of the environment and play a role in ecosystems, conflicts arise when they inhabit spaces that are in close proximity to

human residences. In cases where their presence poses risks or causes damage, professional removal and prevention services can help address the issue effectively and humanely.

How We Remove Squirrels

Inspection

Pest control professionals will conduct a thorough inspection of the property to identify signs of squirrel activity, entry points, nesting sites, and the extent of the infestation. This may include checking attics, crawl spaces, roofs, and other areas where squirrels may be present.

Identification of Entry Points: Locating and sealing entry points is crucial to prevent further access by squirrels. Pest control experts will identify openings, gaps, or vulnerable areas where squirrels may be entering the building.
